"Lyoto is a weird fighter. He's kind of boring. I think that style works for him, the way he makes people run after him. I mean, he's good, he's undefeated, but he's boring. If I was the promoter of a show I wouldn't have guys like that fighting on my show."
- Quinton Jackson tells MMAFanhouse exactly what he thinks of Lyoto Machida's style.
Machida has been the butt of criticism regarding his elusive style since his UFC debut back in early 2007. Much of the criticism stems from the undefeated Brazilian's first four UFC fights -- he took each via unanimous decision by scoring intermittent points from strikes while deftly avoiding damage. He did not engage however, and many fans didn't appreciate his style of winning.
The same can not be said for Machida's last three UFC fights however, as the Karate practitioner finished Rameau Thierry Sokoudjou via submission, out-wrestled Tito Ortiz in a thrilling three round affair and absolutely dominated a clearly over matched Thiago Silva in his last outing; finishing that fight with an emphatic knockout in the very first round.
Fans also forget exciting knockouts Machida scored over UFC stars Rich Franklin and Stephan Bonnar outside of the UFC earlier in his career.
UFC President Dana White recently addressed the issue stating that he believes that Machida needed to get used to fighting in a cage and get his bearings in the UFC. White said that he believes Machida will be the best pound-for-pound fighter in the world eventually and one of the most exciting once he puts it all together inside of the octagon.
And if the last three fights are any indication, White just may be on to something. One things seems clear anyway, Lyoto Machida is unlikely to be pleased at the prospects of being publicly called out by another fighter in his weight class. Especially a fighter that he's likely to face in the near future as both men are considered top contenders in the UFC's light-heavyweight division. A fight between the two is likely and with Jackson's aggressive style and Machida's penchant for putting together exciting performances against aggressive fighters, a fight between these too would be anything but boring.
