Re: News from WEC 40 :Miguel Torres vs Brian Bowles--Jeff Curran vs Joseph Benavidez

Diego Nunes vs. Cub Swanson added to WEC 40

Undefeated Brazilian Diego Nunes (12-0 MMA, 1-0 WEC) will meet WEC and King of the Cage veteran Cub Swanson (13-2 MMA, 3-1 WEC) at "WEC 40: Torres vs. Bowles."

MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com) confirmed the matchup with Swanson, who said bout agreements have been signed.

Nunes will be making his second appearance for the WEC. The 26-year-old Team Nogueira Brazil fighter handed the previously undefeated Cole Province his first loss at WEC 37 in December 2008. The unanimous decision win was the first time Nunes had gone the distance in his four-year career.

Swanson also last fought at WEC 37, earning a unanimous decision win over Hiroyuki Takaya at the December 2008 event. The win was the 26-year-old's second-straight after a December 2007 loss to Jens Pulver snapped an 11-fight win streak for the California resident.

                            Entrevista a Miguel Torres:

MIGUEL TORRES: "I GOT A COUPLE OF TRICKS IN MY BAG THAT NO ONE HAS SEEN YET!"

PC: I know you train your ass off. How is it going?

MT: Ah, it's going good man. I feel real good bro. I just finished training right now and all of my guys say I look good and all is straight. I just boxed for an hour and sparred for an hour so I feel real good right now. I have no injuries. My body is a little sore, but I'm about to start slowing it down a bit for the fight, but I'm ready man. I could fight tomorrow!

PC: You were originally scheduled to fight Brian Bowles. Was that a fight you were looking forward to or was it just another fight for you? Was it a little upsetting he had to pull out?

MT: I don't get upset. I know stuff happens man. It's a rough sport man, especially when you're training for a fight. I was looking forward to fighting Brian. I knew he was going to be a tough fight for me. I know he was going to bring it. He's young; he's never been knocked out or submitted, so he has no fear. He has that invincibility in him to where he thinks he's never going to lose a fight and sometimes, those are the most dangerous fights. I was looking forward to fighting him, but to me, a fight is a fight man. WEC does the best job in the world at finding replacements. They had good notice so they gave Mizugaki a call. I think he was a top prospect out there to fight me so they went out of their way to find me a tough fight and I appreciate that from them.

PC: How much do you know about Mizugaki?

MT: I don't know too much man. I saw some of his fights on YouTube, but nothing too current. I know he is the Cage Force Champion. He fights in a cage so he's used to that. He's not like a lot of other Japanese fighter's that stall for a couple of rounds. He likes to bring it from the get-go. He has a heavy right hand and a big left hook and he doesn't like to be on the floor. He said he wants to knock me out and bang with me so I'm going to give him what he wants and see if he could handle it.

PC: Even though you don't know much about Mizugaki, can we expect the typical Miguel Torres style and fight?

MT: You can always expect to see the typical Miguel Torres. I'm going to come out there and try to knock him out. If the fight goes to the ground, I'll submit him, but unless he takes me down or we fall down for some reason, I'm going to take it to him on my feet man. I'm going for the knockout. I got a couple of tricks in my bag that no one has seen yet and if the time calls for them, I'm going to pull them out my ass.

PC: I know you are one of the hardest workers in the sport, but fighting in your hometown could be a distraction to some fighters. You approach this game differently than a lot of fighters. How does your mental toughness and your approach to the sport help this not to be a distraction?

MT: I got my mental toughness in my hometown, you know? I got tough from fighting here in Chicago. I've been able to fight in front of my friends and family for a long time and that has made me who I am now. When I fight away, it's tougher for me because the support system ain't there. When I fight in my hometown, I get fired up man. It makes me stronger mentally because I know I gotta impress my people. I think fighting in my hometown has the opposite affect on me. It's not a distraction because people know when to stay away from me. The biggest thing for me is to watch what I eat. When I'm home, I got people in restaurants that hook me up all the time so I gotta be careful. You know how that home cooking is.

PC: I know it all too well Champ (laughing)! Jeff Curran has been poppin' off about you lately and he will be fighting in the co-main on your card. Does it bother you that he picked now, right before your title defense, to start talking?

MT: You know what man? I think its typical propaganda; he's trying to get the fight. He's trying to create drama. At first, I didn't want no part of it. I didn't think that it was a respectable thing to do, but I looked at his situation and where he's at. He was at 145 and now he's at 35 and he's trying to bring some shit talking; that's cool man. I know its part of the game. I know Jeff's a good person deep down inside, but when it comes to fighting, he feels he has to talk some shit to get himself a little bit of attention and that's cool man. I hope he wins and I want to give Bowles his shot, but if he wins, that's going to put him a step closer to fighting me and I hope he does man. If me and Curran fight, I guarantee you it's going to be an ugly fight bro! I'm never a nice guy, but I'm going to be an asshole in that fight. Curran is going to bring it and I'm going to try to take his head off. I'm going to try to take his head off with my fist and my chokes.

PC: It's funny that guys still seem to think it's a wise decision to try and piss you off before fights.

MT: You know man, I think that's a weakness. The fight with Yoshiro, everyone thought it was one of the best fights of the year and I thought it was one of the worst fights I've had in my career. For the fans, it was entertaining, but when he cut me, he got me real pissed. When I get pissed, I get a bit reckless because I try to get macho so it doesn't help my game, but when I calmed down in that fight with Yoshiro, I picked him apart and beat him up. I understand when fighters try to get into my head, but at the same time, you don't want to wake a sleeping giant. I'm not one of those guys you want to piss off.

PC: It was appearing that a win over Mizugaki would clear the division out for you, but Bowles is out there and now Curran. How much longer will you stick around at 135?

MT: My career is at 135. In one year, I was able to put the division on the map. Urijah did his thing at 145 and made that weight class popular. Before I retire, I want people to say I was the Muhammad Ali of 135 pounds. I want to rule that weight class for another couple of years. I know the competition is out there. WEC does a great job of bringing good guys in that want to win. I will step up in weight before I retire. I plan on fighting 3-5 more years and I plan on fighting the last two years of my career at whatever weight. Whenever I do that, my dream is to fight in the UFC. My heart is to fight in the UFC. Watching some of the first UFCs and seeing Royce Gracie do his thing is what got me involved. I owe it to my family to move up. Everybody always ask me, "Miguel, when are you going to fight in the UFC?" The WEC is a huge organization, especially for the weight classes that we fight in. People are constantly telling me that I belong in the UFC so I gotta make that jump. One of the things I want to do before I retire is move up in weight.

PC: You said you only have 3-5 years left. It's definitely not because you are slowing down or getting old. Why only 3-5 years left?

MT: I've been doing this sport since I was 17. I've been around for a long time. I don't have any major injuries or bad joints or nothing like that, but there are a lot of other ventures in this sport I want to get into. My gym is growing huge. I have a ton of super tough guys that are trying to come up in this sport. I have gotten some contacts and in the next 3-5 years, I plan on making a lot more contacts. I don't want to fight forever. I don't want to miss my family and my time with my loved ones because I gave it up for my sport. The sport only allows so many fights and it takes up a lot of time. The training camps that I've had for my last 2 fights, I've been away from my daughter. When she was born, I had a fight so I left for Vegas the day after she was born. I didn't even get to spend the first week with her. When I got back, I was doing promos and all kinds of other stuff. I spend a lot of time away from the house and I don't want to miss too much time with her. She's one of the best things to ever happen in my life. I do this for her. I know it's going to secure her future financial-wise, but I don't want to miss out time-wise. I gotta spend time with my family.

PC: Frank Mir always praises you as the top fighter in the world. I know he's training with you. How do you see the rematch between him and Lesnar going?

MT: I think he will submit Lesnar again. The first time they fought, no one gave him a chance. They thought Lesnar was going to walk through him. Lesnar brought some pain in the beginning, but I think Frank is in a good place right now. He has a good training camp, he trains year round now and not just for the fights. He doesn't party anymore and he's happy now. Frank Mir is one of those guys who could be a professional athlete at any sport; football, soccer or whatever. He's totally agile, flexible and powerful. He has a great mind in the sport, but he's been through a lot of things in his life. The accident he had and other issues that he had are all cleared up now. He's family oriented. He fights to provide for his family and he's grounded now. He's very dangerous right now and I think he's back. I can see him submitting Lesnar again. When Lesnar beat Couture, he beat a 45-year-old Couture that hadn't fought in a year. That's something that people have to take into consideration. Mir just beat Nog man. He was one of my heroes. No one gave him a chance in that fight either and he made Nog look pretty bad. I'm pulling for Mir. I think he can take this fight anywhere he wants. Unless Brock plays the boring game and takes him down to lay and pray, I think Frank submits him.

PC: Always a pleasure to speak with you my man. Good luck in April. Is there anything you want to say in closing?

MT: I appreciate all of the support man. I appreciate everything you guys do for me. I know I don't get to talk to a lot of my fans, but I know you guys are out there and I appreciate the love!
