An undisclosed injury has forced Brazilian Jiu-jitsu ace Ricardo Almeida out of his scheduled fight at UFC 90 in Chicago. Stepping in to replace him is highly touted middleweight prospect Dan Miller, who will now face Matt Horwich on Oct. 25.
The fight has been verbally agreed to by both fighters and should be signed shortly according to sources close to the situation, as confirmed to MMAWeekly.com
Miller was signed to the UFC recently after a stint in the International Fight League that saw him crowned the last-ever middleweight champion for the now defunct promotion.
Ironically enough his opponent, Matt Horwich, was the first ever IFL middleweight champion, but lost the belt during his first title defense a few months later.
Miller made an impressive debut in the Octagon by submitting veteran fighter Rob Kimmons by rear naked choke in the first round of their match-up at the UFC Fight Night event in mid-September.
Meanwhile, Horwich will be making his UFC debut after a long career that has spanned numerous events all over the world.
The Team Quest fighter had a solid run while fighting with the IFL posting a 7-4 record while competing in both the middleweight and light heavyweight divisions.
Miller and Horwich will be a part of the undercard fights as the main event of the evening will pit widely regarded pound-for-pound and 185-pound king Anderson Silva against Patrick Cote for the UFC middleweight title.
Goran Reljic is out of his scheduled match-up with Thales Leites at UFC 90 in Chicago. Reljic's manager, Zoran Saric, told MMAWeekly.com, "Reljic will not be able to fight on Oct. 25 at UFC 90. A back problem will force him out of a scheduled bout with Thales Leites."
His back problems don't sound as if they will keep Reljic sidelined for long though. According to Saric, "He will be out two to four months, nothing severe."
Reljic is a dynamic Croatian fighter with an undefeated 8-0 record. He made an immediate impact when he debuted in the Octagon at UFC 84. Reljic faced American Top Team product Wilson Gouveia, dispatching the UFC veteran midway through the second round via TKO.
Following a hiccup named Martin Kampmann in his Octagon debut, Leites has since embarked on a four-fight winning streak, including a controversial split decision over Nate Marquardt at UFC 85.
No word of who will be tapped to replace Reljic has surfaced.
The bout between Reljic and Leites was believed to produce a likely contender for the UFC middleweight championship currently dominated by Anderson Silva, who will defend his belt against Canadian Patrick Cote in the UFC 90 main event.
[quote]Diego Sanchez has been forced to withdraw from a highly anticipated welterweight showdown with Thiago Alves at UFC 90.
Sanchez representative Jeff Clark told Sherdog.com that the injury was sustained in a training session last week, and what was originally thought to be a ruptured spleen turned out to be damage to his ribs, possibly to an intercostal muscle or cartilage.
The Oct. 25 card scheduled for the Allstate Arena in Rosemont, Ill., will not suffer greatly, however. Fellow welterweight standout Josh Koscheck has agreed to step in for his injured fellow alum from the inaugural season of
