The rumored heavyweight bout between Russian Fedor Emelianenko (Pictures) and South Korean Hong Man Choi (Pictures) was made official Thursday at a press conference in Tokyo. Also, it was announced the year-ending Yarennoka! card would feature a middleweight clash between Kazuo Misaki (Pictures) and Yoshihiro Akiyama (Pictures), reports Sherdog.com's Taro Kotani.
Emelianenko-Choi will be featured in North America as part of a live HDNet broadcast from Tokyo starting at 3 a.m. PT/6 a.m ET on Monday, Dec. 31.
The Russian, widely regarded as the No 1 heavyweight on the planet, has taken flack for a lack of action and the failure to face quality opponents. In Choi, Emelianenko fights a man with just one mixed martial arts bout to his name. The 7-foot-2, 350-pound Choi had to back out of a fight with Brock Lesnar (Pictures) in June, when the California State Athletic Commission declined to license him over medical concerns.
However, the Misaki-Akiyama clash, made possible by different Japanese promoters coming together for the card, is an exciting, relevant fight. Akiyama last fought on October, when he bested fan favorite Denis Kang (Pictures) in Korea. Misaki, meanwhile, hasn't fought since dropping a unanimous decision to Frank Trigg (Pictures) on the final PRIDE card in the U.S.
It was also announced on Thursday that Bobby Ologun (Pictures) will continue his one-fight-a-year pace when he returns to "Dynamite!!" to face Bob Sapp (Pictures).
