It now appears that the IBF eliminator at light heavyweight between ex-WBA titlist Gabriel Campillo (21-3, 8KOs) and IBF Intercontinental ruler Karo Murat (24-1, 14KOs) will go ahead on October 1 but where it takes place has not been finalized. Campillo was won two in a row since the controversial decision loss to Beibut Shumenov in their rematch, and Murat has picked up two wins since the TKO loss to Nathan Cleverly last September.

Ariza: Pacquiao vs Marquez III is Personal For Manny

On July 16th Juan Manuel Marquez cleared the way for a third fight with rival Manny Pacquiao by stretching out Columbia’s Likar Ramos inside of one round at that Plaza de Toros in Cancun, Mexico. Set to take place at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada on November 12th, Marquez’s challenge for Pacquiao’s WBO welterweight title is one of the year’s biggest fights and it has been a long time coming.

The two men first met in May of 2004, with Pacquiao dropping Marquez three times in the first round before Marquez recovered to fight the rest of the fight on even terms, ultimately settling for a split draw. Nearly four years later the action was just as intense as Pacquiao came away with a split-decision win at the Mandalay Bay as a 3rd round knockdown seemed to be the deciding factor amongst many who gave him the edge that night.

The career paths of the two men haven't exactly been polar opposite, both have had success, but Pacquiao has taken his career to new heights by winning titles from 140 to 154 pounds while tearing through a high-profile list of opponents. Marquez may not be the most dangerous fight out there at the moment, but for Manny’s strength and conditioning coach Alex Ariza, it appears to be one of the only fights with serious emotions attached to it.

“I think it’s great,” Ariza told me recently. “This is the fight that Freddie and I have wanted for a long time now. Marquez is always complaining and whining about it but he priced himself out of it so many times that it never really happened. Finally they got it done and now it’s time to put up or shut up.”

Marquez has seemed to have a borderline obsession with Pacquiao ever since tasting defeat in their second fight, even going as far as to wear a T-shirt that read ‘Marquez beat Pacquiao twice’ after his win over Michael Katsidis last November. Marquez has also lashed out with plenty of derogatory remarks towards the Filipino icon and Ariza absolutely can sense a feeling of disdain in the air.

“Yes, absolutely,” Ariza affirmed. “I think he dislikes him. Because he’s always whining about how he lost by one point, but a loss is a loss. Whether you lose by one point or ten points, a loss is a loss.”

Ariza was a part of Pacquiao’s team for the Marquez rematch but didn’t begin to play an intricate role until the fight’s aftermath. Ariza worked hands-on with Pacquiao in the following months as they prepared for Chicago’s David Diaz, then WBC lightweight champion of the world, and reflected back on the different techniques he implemented during those weeks in camp.

“Well, I think that’s when we began to change everything. It’s like everything that Manny was doing was redundant. It’s the same old thing, running around in circles or running up hills. But, more importantly, he had a very severe shin splint problem and that was a time when Manny had hurt his shoulder and he said he felt like the muscle was being torn off his bone, that’s how much it hurt him when he was fighting Marquez and Barrera. It’s just so funny that it was something so simple but none of those guys addressed it. But that’s when we first started changing things,” said Ariza.

The Colombian-born coach also admitted that it was that time in which he really felt a sense of camaraderie with Pacquiao.

“When you troubleshoot things like that with Manny, that’s when you earn his trust because he sees the little things you do are making such differences,” Ariza said.

After a dreadful fight with Shane Mosley in May, one in which most of the blame fell on the reluctant Pomona fighter after he was in retreat mode following a 3rd round knockdown, Pacquiao is again looking to put forth a virtuoso performance and Marquez may be the perfect dance partner at this point. And while the 37-year old Marquez may have plenty of wear and tear on his bones after some hard battles, Ariza points out that the temperament of the Mexico City stalwart is reason enough to have anticipation towards the trilogy.

“For me it’s just a personal thing that I’ve wanted. Because I’d liked to see it because whether I like Marquez or whether I don’t like Marquez, the fact of the matter is that he is exciting to watch. He comes to fight, he’s got a great style, he’s a competitor, and he won’t run no matter how tough the going gets. He’s there to put on a show. I used to be a fan of Marquez and I still am, as far as watching him fight. For me it’s very exciting because we get to prepare for somebody who’s going to show up for the fight.”

El púgil estadounidense Kelly Pavlik ha suspendido la pelea que tenía prevista disputar este fin de semana frente a Darryl Counningham.Parece ser que una vez más los problemas extra deportivos podrían ser la causa de la cancelación, Pavlik hace unos meses era considerado uno de los mejores boxeadores libra por libra pero sus coqueteos con el alcohol y su derrota frente al argentino Sergio “Maravilla” Martínez hicieron que la carrera del estadounidense cayese empicado, tras someterse a un programa de rehabilitación de alcoholismo y reaparecer en mayo frente a Alfonso López parecía que la carrera boxística se volvía a realzar pero esta cancelación indica todo lo contrario.
La velada era organizada por Top Rank, la promotora está muy decepcionada por la repentina decisión de Kelly de interrumpir la reconstrucción de su carrera en el boxeo y ha anunciado que se reembolsará el dinero a los compradores de las entradas.

Cancelada pelea de Pavlik

El ex campeón de peso mediano Kelly Pavlik, tratando de regresar a los cuadriláteros tras su paso por una rehabilitación por alcohol y una gran pelea de título mundial pactada para noviembre ante Lucian Bute, canceló el lunes por la noche su participación en la pelea de este sábado ante Darryl Cunningham.
No se dieron razones específicas, aunque el presidente de Top Rank Todd duBoef dijo el martes que Pavlik no estaba lesionado. La cartelera completa fue cancelada.
"Top Rank está muy decepcionada de la repentina decisión de Kelly de no continuar reconstruyendo su carrera boxística", dijo duBoef el martes al hacer el anuncio. El pasado 7 de mayo, Pavlik, de 29 años, finalizó un descanso de 13 meses que siguió con su sangrienta derrota por decisión ante Sergio Martínez en abril de 2010, en la que perdió el título, y un paso por una clínica de rehabilitación de alcohol a finales de año.
Pavlik subió a las 168 libras, y aunque lució muy oxidado superó por puntos a López en la cartelera previa al choque entre Manny Pacquiao y Shane Mosley.
Con la pelea ante Bute siendo planeada para el otoño, Pavlik y su equipo pidieron que Top Rank arregle otra pelea para él, de modo que pueda continuar poniéndose al día luego de un descanso tan largo y que lo haga acumulando rounds ante un zurdo.
DuBoef dijo que recibió una llamada de Cameron Dunkin, co-manejador de Pavlik, el lunes por la noche diciéndole que Pavlik cancelaba su pelea del sábado.
"Cameron dijo que Kelly no estaba interesado en continuar adelante con su pelea del sábado y que por lo tanto no la haría", dijo duBoef. "Yo le dije 'esa es su decisión. Nosotros estamos decepcionados'. Es su decisión, pero es muy poco profesional. Cameron me dijo 'odio decirles esto, pero él no está de acuerdo con el plan'. Cameron estaba muy molesto porque el plan era ponerlo nuevamente en el ring. Ese es el camino a la recuperación y a la reconstrucción. No vamos a darle esta pelea en agosto y ellos nos llamaron pidiéndola, por eso la hicimos".
DuBoef dijo que su primer pensamiento cuando escuchó que Pavlik cancelaba su aparición era que quizás estaba bebiendo nuevamente, aunque no hay evidencia de eso.
"No fue mencionado pero fue lo primero que yo especulé", dijo duBoef. "Mi primer pensamiento fue desear que su salud no estuviese en riesgo. Nosotros operamos inocentemente con Kelly en lo que hace a sus demonios del pasado. Nosotros tomamos indicaciones de su equipo.
"Pero el comportamiento que muestra aquí es algo errático y poco profesional. Tengo mucha simpatía con (Showtime), los fanáticos, el equipo de trabajo (del Covelli Centre) y el público de Youngstown que esperaba ver a Kelly trabajando en este evento. Desafortunadamente esto no fue así. Kelly y su equipo tienen que hacerse algunos cuestionamientos. Las respuestas están sobre él más que sobre ninguna otra persona".
Cuando Pavlik habló con los reporteros sobre la pelea en una teleconferencia la semana pasada, él pareció estar contento de estar peleando nuevamente de manera rápida tras su victoria en mayo y también habló largamente sobre su posible pelea ante Bute.
"Voy a hacer lo mío. Voy a hacer un gran show", dijo Pavlik. "Voy a pelear con todas mis fuerzas. Siempre es bueno pelear en casa. Quién sabe cuándo sea la próxima vez, por eso tengo que hacer el mejor trabajo posible cuando tenga la oportunidad".
Con respecto a Bute, Pavlik dijo que "yo pienso que es un muy buen peleador. Obviamente lo es. Hay algunas cosas cuestionables de él. Yo creo que es probablemente uno de los mejores pegadores al cuerpo en el boxeo de hoy, por lejos, pero también creo que tiene mucha habilidad boxística. No creo que en general sea tan talentoso como (Sergio) Martínez en lo que hace a movimiento y viveza. Él tiene el paquete completo, pero pienso que todos verán cuando yo entre a esa pelea que van a ver a un Kelly Pavlik diferente. Tengo hambre de triunfo y quiero recuperar mi título".

Permite médico pelear a Margarito

Nuevo rival para Terrible Morales

CIUDAD DE MEXICO -- El mexicano Erik Morales tendrá nuevo rival para la pelea por el título vacante welter Jr. del Consejo Mundial de Boxeo. En lugar de enfrentar al argentino Jorge La Hiena Barrios, El Terrible Morales se verá con Lucas Matthysse el próximo 17 de septiembre en Las Vegas, Nevada.

Barrios no obtuvo la visa para entrar a Estados Unidos y ante esta situación, el CMB realizó la petición para que Matthysse intercambie golpes contra Morales en la Arena Grand Garden del hotel casino MGM.

La contienda Morales-Matthysse será la semifinal de la velada "Poder Estelar" protagonizada por los estadounidenses Floyd Mayweather y Víctor Ortiz por el fajín mundial welter CMB.

La pelea entre Morales y Matthysse ya fue anunciada por la promotora Golden Boy Promotions, sin embargo aún no hubo pronunciamiento oficial de parte del equipo del Terrible Morales, quien viajó a Los Angeles para ofrecer este miércoles conferencia.

K9 Bundrage: 'Let the dog off the chain' for Wolak

Top Rank Chariman Bob Arum has targeted junior middleweight contender Pawel Wolak for the undercard of the Miguel Cotto-Antonio Margarito rematch on Dec. 3 at Madision Square Garden in New York. IBF titleholder Cornelius Bundrage wants to be Wolak's dance partner. "OOOOHHHHH!!! Down goes Wolak!!! Down goes Wolak!!! I've been hearing that Pawel Wolak wants a piece of 'The Dog,'" said Bundrage, whose ring nickname is "K9."
"People are saying that he is interested in a fight with me from what I've been hearing. I've been hearing that Pawel Wolak wants to fight me on Dec.3."
The 38-year-old Bundrage (31-4, 18 knockouts) was referring to Wolak's recent interview with RingTV.com, when he expressed the desire to meet Bundrage on the Cotto-Margarito PPV undercard.
"Cornelius Bundrage has been coming up as a possible name for me," said Wolak. "I think that coming back on the Cotto card is probably the best thing for me."
Bundrage was encouraged, to say the least.
"I was so happy and excited that I tried to call [his promoter] Don King and [his manager] Emanuel Steward, but I mis-dialed and wound up calling 911," said Bundrage. "When I finally talked to Emanuel, he basically said, 'Let's do it.' I'm the world champion, and I'm not mandatory to fight Pawel Wolak, but I think that I'd give him the opportunity."
Nicknamed "The Raging Bull," the 29-year-old Wolak (29-1-1, 19 KOs) has an 8-0-1 unbeaten streak that includes five stoppages in his past nine fights.
The New Jersey-based Pole, known for his in-your-face style of fighting, is coming off of a majority draw against Dominican Republic-born Delvin Rodriguez (25-5-3, 14 KO) on July 15.
"It would be a good fight because he's one of those guys who is going to be right there, and he's a fan-pleaser. But I'm also a fan-pleaser, so I'm going to be right there with him," said Bundrage. "I think they're going to let the dog off the chain for this one, and I'm ready for it. I'm ready for this type of a fight."
Bundrage is coming off of last month's unanimous decision over Sechew Powell (26-3, 15 KOs) that avenged his first-round knockout loss from May of 2005.
Prior to facing Powell, Bundrage dethroned Cory Spinks for the belt, winning by fifth-round knockout in August of nearly a year ago.
Wolak's biggest career win was in March by sixth-round knockout over former WBA titlist Yuri Foreman, who had battled to a third-round no decision against Bundrage three fights earlier in June of 2009.
The Foreman-Bundrage bout was stopped after Foreman was cut by an accidental head butt. Bundrage trailed, 29-28, on two judges' cards, and, 30-27, on that of the third at the time the bout's end.
"Wolak beat Yuri Foreman, but I was the blueprint to beating Yuri Foreman," said Bundrage. "If you go back to that fight, I was getting ready to stop Yuri Foreman when he got cut."
Five months after facing Bundrage, Foreman dethroned Daniel Santos for the WBA title only to be dethroned by Cotto via ninth-round knockout in his next fight in June of 2010.
"If you go look at the fight where Cotto beat Yuri Foreman, it was the same way that I was about to beat Yuri Foreman," said Wolak. "So after I beat Wolak, I would want the fight with Miguel Cotto because I want to fight the top, top guys."
But what would a Cotto-Bundrage fight mean for Steward, who also trains Cotto?
"Manny already told me that he wouldn't stop me from eating," said Bundrage. "He told me that he would eat some popcorn, have a Coke and a smile and sit back and watch the fight."
Steward disagreed.
"It wouldn't be a Coke," said Steward. "It would be a Sprite or something else, because I don't drink caffeine."

Pavlik could regret his decision for the rest of his life

Kelly Pavlik has had to bounce back from some difficult circumstances, including devastating losses to Bernard Hopkins and Sergio Martinez, a life-threatening staph infection in his hand and a public battle with excessive drinking. The former middleweight champion is now face to face with what might be the biggest threat to his boxing career.
Pavlik on Monday made the decision to pull out of a fight with Darryl Cunningham that was scheduled for Saturday in Youngstown, Ohio – Pavlik’s hometown – on Showtime.
In the process, any momentum he had regained after the Martinez setback was lost and he alienated a number of important parties.
That includes Showtime, which might never again book him on the network; promoter Bob Arum, who might be wise to sever ties with the fighter; and his own trainer, Jack Loew, who has been at Pavlik’s side through all the tribulations.
“I'm very, very concerned about this young man,” Arum told RingTV.com. “I consider the actions that he has taken at this point to be very, very bizarre.
“How can anybody book him in a fight when he acts in this manner?”
Pavlik, 29, recovered from the infection and was dealing with his alcohol issues, which allowed Top Rank to devise a plan to get the former middleweight champ back to the top.
And it was a good plan. First, he moved up to a more-comfortable super middleweight. Then he faced solid, but limited Alfonso Lopez in his first fight in more than a year, which he won by majority decision.
Next came Cunningham, another beatable foe. And then came the payoff: If he beat Cunningham, he would face IBF 168-pound titleholder Lucian Bute in a fight that would bring back the spotlight and provide the opportunity put all his missteps behind him.
What was the problem? Apparently the money.
Arum said Pavlik would make $1.35 million to fight Bute, which Pavlik came to believe was far less than the amount Mikkel Kessler turned down to fight Bute. Pavlik’s reaction was to pull out of both the Cunningham and Bute fights, a mistake that could haunt him the rest of his life.
The one-time star-in-the-making was in no position to make such a move. He is far removed from his sensational back-to-back victories over Jermain Taylor, which seemed to portend great things.
As it turned out, the second Taylor fight – in February 2008 – was his last truly important victory. Victories over Gary Lockett, Marco Antonio Rubio, Miguel Espino and Alfonso Lopez were nice but didn’t give him the bargaining leverage of a superstar.
On top of that, he had to pull out of two fights last year, one against Paul Williams because of the staph infection and another against Brian Vera because of what he called a rib injury.
Pavlik then checked himself into rehab in an effort to control his drinking. He seemed to be on the right track in his recovery only to end up in a fist fight with his brother a few weeks ago, sparking rumors that he was drinking again.
Thus, in light of all that, he’s unbelievably fortunate to be in a position to fight for a major title for a seven-figure payday even if what he heard about Kessler is true.
A victory over Bute, which wasn’t out of the question, would’ve vaulted Pavlik back to top of the boxing world and into a position to command huge paydays in the near future. The pot of gold was directly in front of his face.
And now that opportunity appears to be lost because of Pavlik’s decision to walk, which is both perplexing and sad.
“I really think that there are some sort of mental issues there,” Arum said.
Remember Pavlik’s knockout of Edison Miranda in 2007, which made it clear that he could be a force in the sport? Remember the riveting first fight with Taylor, in which he was hurt but rallied to stop the champ to win two middleweight titles?
The boxing world was abuzz over the strapping, hard-punching young man from the Midwest at that time. Now, after the stunt he pulled this time, no one could blame the powers that be if they stayed clear of him from now on.
Even those close to him have made it clear that they’re growing tired of defending him publicly.
Now it’s up to Pavlik to come to his senses and try to repair the damage he caused – if it’s not too late.

Ring Ratings Update: Khan-Bradley pound-for-pound debate continues

The moment it was announced that THE RING had elevated Amir Khan to the top spot of its junior welterweight ratings, bumping Timothy Bradley down to the No. 2 spot, some fans wondered why the British star was not also added to the magazine’s pound-for-pound top 10. Bradley is currently No. 6 in THE RING’s Pound-for-Pound ratings. Khan is still outside of the magazine’s pound-for-pound top 10, despite overtaking Bradley in the junior welterweight rankings.
It’s understandable why some fans and members of the media questioned Khan’s omission. The 24-year-old titleholder’s accomplishments seem equal to Bradley‘s.
Khan (26-1, 18 knockouts), who currently holds the WBA and the IBF 140-pound titles, has won eight bouts in a row since he suffered a first-round stoppage to Breidis Prescott in September of 2008.
His win streak includes a technical decision over faded future-hall-of-famer Marco Antonio Barrera and victories over five RING-rated junior welterweights (Andreas Kotelnik, Paul Malignaggi, Marcos Maidana, Paul McCloskey and Zab Judah).
Bradley (27-0, 11 KOs) has also defeated five RING-rated junior welterweights (Junior Witter, Kendal Holt, Nate Campbell, Lamont Peterson and Devon Alexander), as well as THE RING’s No. 8-rated lightweight Miguel Vazquez.
The 27-year-old native of Palm Springs, Calif., currently holds the WBO 140-pound belt and has twice won the WBC title, which was recently stripped from him.
So why is Bradley a pound-for-pound player, and not Khan?
Perhaps being unbeaten gives Bradley an edge. Or maybe it’s the welterweight victory he has over then-undefeated Luis Carlos Abregu.
As fans debate the issue, THE RING’s Editor-in-Chief Nigel Collins would like to remind us that the pound-for-pound rankings are subjective.

“The thing that fans and readers must keep in mind is that there is a highly significant difference between the divisional ratings and pound-for-pound ratings,“ Collins said. “Divisional ratings are, as much as humanly possible, strictly objective and based on results within the divisions. Pound-for-pounds rankings, however, are much more subjective and also take into consideration the opinions of THE RING Ratings Advisory Panel and the editors, as well as the fighters’ overall body of work.
“Khan was advanced over Bradley in the divisional ratings due to greater activity, but Bradley’s Pound-for-Pound ranking was not effected.”

Featherweights: Billy Dib enters at No. 10 on the strength of his 12-round decision over Jorge Lacierva (No. 10 last week). Lacierva exits.

Strawweights: Oleydong Sithsamerchai (No. 3 last weeks) departs to campaign at junior bantamweight, but has not yet accomplished enough at 115 pounds to earn a rating in his new division. Sithsamerchai’s exit allows all rated No. 4 or below last week to climb one rung each. The void at No. 10 is filled by Pronsawan Porpramook, who is coming off a decision win over Muhammad Rachman.
