Garcia on Rios Sparring Maidana, Mayweather-Canelo
When crude brawler Marcos Maidana first began training at Robert Garcia’s gym in Oxnard, Calif., you could sense just how much of a transition the Argentinean was in for.
Maidana (33-3, 30 KO’s) was coming off of a humbling decision loss to Devon Alexander months prior and had enlisted the services of Garcia in hopes of retooling himself as he eyed another title run.
A little over a year later and Maidana is a few days away from another pivotal test, as he will be meeting up with well-seasoned Josesito Lopez (31-1, 18 KO’s) this weekend in a Showtime-televised clash in Carson.
And while there is much uncertainty with his duel with the capable Lopez, what has been become more concrete is the fighter's connection to Garcia due to their tireless work behind closed doors.
Speaking with Garcia during Wednesday’s media day, we touched on a few storylines, including Maidana’s focus in camp, his memorable sparring sessions with his stable mate Brandon Rios, the challenge Rios faces with his November 23rd clash with Manny Pacquiao, and more.

The man who many believe did enough to defeat Floyd Mayweather Jr. (44-0, 26KOs) on April 20, 2002 - Mexico's Jose Luis Castillo - believes WBC/WBA junior middleweight champion Saul "Canelo" Alvarez (42-0-1, 30KOs) can do enough to unseat the pound-for-pound king on September 14th at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas. It won't be easy and Castillo says the 22-year-old champion will have to use the right tactics.
"I did everything humanly possible to win that day, and I think I won the fight," Castillo said. "I demonstrated, I believe, that Mayweather was not invincible, but he is a great fighter. He is very complete, good stamina, fast. I think he should be in the top five in the world in boxing history."
"I think that my style was complicated for Mayweather, and I do not believe that it was only matter of luck for. Back then he was moving more and now he seems to stand in one spot more often. Canelo will have to work on covering [Mayweather's] exits so he can't get away. That gave me results."
"I think the weight advantage is in favor Canelo, if it does not affect him to come down to [152-pounds]. I hope he prepares very well because he will be going into the fight of his life."
