Floyd Mayweather has confirmed he will put his unbeaten record on the line in a light-middleweight unification world title fight against Saúl 'Canelo' Alvarez in Las Vegas in September. Four titles are at stake with the fight taking place at a catchweight of 152lbs.

Alvarez (42-0-1, with 30 knockout wins) is arguably Mayweather's toughest test to date and, with the contest taking place on Mexican independence day weekend.

Former four division world champion Erik Morales remembers when was a big underdog against Manny Pacquiao in 2005. Morales was coming off a loss to Marco Antonio Barrera, but he found the magic to hand Pacquiao a twelve round decision loss. Morales would go on to lose his next four fights and Pacquiao remained without another blemish until June 2012.

Morales now reflects on the big match that involves his countryman, 22-year-old WBC/WBA junior middleweight champion Saul "Canelo" Alvarez (42-0-1, 30KOs), who faces Floyd Mayweather Jr. (44-0, 26KOs) on September 14th at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas.

He notes that Mayweather has faced issues in both of his prior junior middleweight fights, against Oscar De La Hoya and Miguel Cotto. Both of those opponents were past their best. Canelo is younger, stronger and bigger than De La Hoya and Cotto.

"It's an interesting fight, where no doubt the battle of youth against experience will be a defining factor. The fight is like a mystery, it brings out the curiosity in you, the desire to see that fight. Floyd is a fighter who most of the time has selected opponents where he was in a somewhat comfortable position. Canelo has also been in with opponents where he was somewhat comfortable. The important part is where Floyd has the experience and Saul is young, strong - and we expect to see a great fight," Morales said.

"Floyd has never faced such a strong young man, a fighter who is willing to offer everything of himself to win and has nothing to lose. You have to respect the hierarchy of Mayweather. It is going to be interesting because Mayweather always handles himself well the ring, keeps a good distance, and he does not like to be hit. He throws many slapping punches, simply with speed and not with any real technique, and [those punches] are a great nuisance."

"Canelo is young, strong, fast, but he does not have the continued pace to put together combinations. He always studies [his opponent], and looks for openings to land his shots. This [fight] will be a good measuring stick to see where his boxing [abilities] are at."

Cortez favorece experiencia de Floyd

Le tocó dirigir peleas de algunos de los mejores boxeadores de la historia, tiene el récord extraoficial de peleas de campeonato mundial dirigidas como árbitro y es el único réferi hispano en haber ingresado al Salón de la Fama del Boxeo Internacional. Pero no por eso, Joe Cortez no se entusiasma con el anuncio de la pelea entre Floyd Mayweather Jr. y Saúl 'Canelo' Álvarez.

"Quiero ver la pelea en persona para charlar con los fanáticos y hablar de este encuentro que va a ser muy especial", dice Cortez. "Esta va a ser una de las peleas más grandes en los últimos 10 años del boxeo".



El hombre nacido en Nueva York de sangre puertorriqueña estuvo en el mismo cuadrilátero con Mayweather en cuatro ocasiones, y con Álvarez en una ocasión, la cual fue por cierto su despedida del ring como réferi, el pasado 15 de septiembre cuando el campeón mexicano noqueó a Josesito López.

Al hablar de lo que más le impresionó de Mayweather cuando dirigió sus peleas, Cortez menciona la inteligencia y preparación del mejor boxeador del mundo libra por libra de la actualidad.

"En el ring, habiendo estado con los mejores, veo que Mayweather tiene un estilo increíble, siempre está pensando, sabe cuándo tirar sus combinaciones. Mayweather tira su golpe y la mayoría del tiempo va a conectar con ese golpe", dice Cortez, de 69 años de edad, quien fue el tercer hombre sobre el cuadrilátero cuando Mayweather noqueó de manera controversial a Víctor Ortiz en septiembre de 2011. "Es muy inteligente, trae mucho estilo y espíritu. Cuando va a pelear les enseña a todos que él es el mejor en el mundo. Cuando se mueve en el ring dices, '¡Wow!' Es muy difícil ganarle".

Pero Cortez, quien dirigió alrededor de 3,000 combates a lo largo de una carrera que duró 35 años, también quedó muy impresionado cuando vio pelear a Álvarez contra López, combate tras el cual, el peleador pelirrojo simbólicamente colocó su cinturón de monarca del CMB sobre la cintura del árbitro, sabiendo que había dirigido su última pelea. "Estuvo muy tranquilo, nunca perdió su control en el ring, tenía tremenda pegada, tenía buenos golpes al cuerpo, buenas combinaciones y buena defensa. Se vio como un boxeador con mucha más experiencia de la que él tiene".

Cortez cree, sin embargo, que Mayweather es favorito, si bien advierte que el boxeo siempre tiene sorpresas grandes y que Álvarez podría lastimar con su potente derecha a Mayweather como lo hizo con Austin Trout en abril pasado.

"'Canelo' Álvarez es un superestrella de la actualidad, es un muchacho que tiene 22 años y tiene un gran futuro, tremendo estilo como boxeador y es un muchacho que tiene hambre", reconoce el ex réferi, en entrevista. "Pero no sé si todavía tiene la experiencia que va a tener en uno o dos años más. Mayweather tiene 36 años, y 36 no es lo mismo que 22, pero trae mucha experiencia en el ring y tiene un estilo que es muy difícil pegarle, tiene buena pegada y yo creo que en este momento se le va a hacer un poco difícil a Canelo porque no tiene la experiencia de Mayweather y éste, en su última pelea, peleó como un boxeador de 22 años.

"Va a ser súper interesante porque creo que los dos vienen a batallar, pero la experiencia siempre supera al muchacho. Va a ser bien cerrada pero estoy favoreciendo a Mayweather simplemente por la historia que ya trae".

El 7 de junio de 1996, Joe Cortez fue el réferi de la pelea que en ese momento paralizó a los aficionados: Julio César Chávez contra Óscar de la Hoya, la primera de sus dos contiendas. Él dice que Mayweather vs. Álvarez se parece a aquella cita, "Mayweather siendo Julio y Canelo siendo Óscar. Uno más grande de edad y el otro más joven".

El joven De la Hoya, invicto y mediático, ganó el pleito estelar de hace 17 años. Álvarez tratará de hacer lo mismo en la pelea del próximo 14 de septiembre. Joe Cortez no se la va a perder.

Hasta Beristain, mejor entrenador del mundo, que ha estado de juicios y pleitos contra el equipo del Canelo, ha reconocido que el Canelo tiene posibilidades de llevarselo.Y Beristain no es de los que se corten diciendo las cosas como hay que decirlas, aunque sea a amigos (por ejemplo diciendo que la defensa de Chávez jr., amigo del gym, es una basura y que de momento no es prospecto a tener en cuenta por su falta de técnica).



Estamos todos en el mismo barco, Believe Cola, Believe...

Me encantaria aunque fuera que solo lograse un knockdown, pero amigo creo que no podra ni olerlo. Juegan en divisiones diferentes, Mayweather es Dios con guantes de boxeo, Canelo es un toro de 22 años que lo dara todo, pero creo que es missmatch.

Esta es la mejor pelea que puede darse, los dos mejores superwelter del mundo unificando títulos, creo que el Canelo, es el oponente más peligroso de Mayweather desde De la Hoya.Hasta le va a hacer un catchweight, cosa que no había hecho antes (aunque si que hizo trampas con el peso para la pelea con Márquez, de forma ilegal).

El Canelo es algo más que un toro, ha ido demostrando pelea a pelea una increíble mejora técnica tanto ofensiva como defensiva y gran capacidad de contragolpeo, paciencia, y sentido de la oportunidad.¿Qué será lo próximo que le veamos mejorar para el 14 de septiembre? Ya de entrada estaba hablando para llevarse al preparador físico de Manny Pacquiao de cara a esta pelea, ya que ahora mismo su principal defecto es la estamina, antes lo que se le criticaba era la cintura y mira como apareció para la pelea con Trout (donde por cierto el Canelo era underdog), aunque ya se vio también algo mejora en este aspecto para la pelea con Josesito.




Ay como le calze una de esas!...

El Canelo debe hacer una pelea inteligente y abrir huecos con el jab para poder meter sus brutales combinaciones de golpes a diferentes alturas, debe hacer daño a Mayweather en los primeros rounds para mermarlo, e ir cortandole el ring inteligentemente trabajando sobre el jab, como hizo Cotto...

Con la diferencia de que el Canelo es más rápido, más grande, pega más fuerte y tiene más variedad que Cotto(tan solo más lento de pies, por ahora, y de jab Cotto buenísimo y el Canelo también bueno pero con bastante más alcance que el boricua).

Álvarez deberá seleccionar cuidadosamente el momento perfecto para sus esporádicas acometidas típicas con combinaciones explosivas y largas, dosificarlas muy bien, para no fallar golpes y perder aún más estamina golpeando el aire.Debe también, por esta misma razón, cuidarse muy bien de los rectos al cuerpo marca de la casa Mayweather, que pueden hacerle perder el combate vaciándolo de oxígeno.

Pd: Maidana tiene cada vez más pinta de tailandés.Y lo veo más fibrado que de costumbre, tiene pinta de estar preparando muy en serio este combate.

With his May 4th victory over Robert Guerrero still fresh in everyone’s mind, Floyd Mayweather wasted little time in again shaking up the boxing world with another big announcement.

Taking to his personal Twitter account this past Wednesday, Mayweather revealed that the 45th bout of his undefeated career will be against Mexico’s Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez, holder of the WBA and WBC titles at 154 pounds.

Some had expected Mayweather, who holds titles in the welterweight and junior middleweight divisions, to continue campaigning at 147 pounds in the wake of the Guerrero performance. His clash with Alvarez is looked at as one of the most dangerous of his career and that’s why everyone has been talking about this fight.

Catching up with Mayweather’s Uncle and trainer Roger inside of the Mayweather Boxing Club on Friday afternoon, there were several facets of the matchup that we discussed.

Why Alvarez’s size won’t matter…
“That’s somebody that they think can beat Floyd. It’s just somebody they believe can beat Floyd. I guess they’re going to fight at 152 pounds. Weight don’t win fights anyways. Weight won’t win this one either.”

Reflecting on Floyd’s victory over Guerrero…
“I thought Floyd beat him easy. Outpointed him, beat him easy. He maybe could have been a little more aggressive, but I heard he hurt his hand. Floyd, his Dad, and me, we train differently. Because, Floyd, with me, he’s more aggressive. He still uses skill, but he’s more aggressive. It is what it is. But this fight is going to be a little different I believe.”

Assessing ‘Canelo’…
"I’ve seen probably three fights. He’s alright. He aint no beast like they say he is. He’s a kind of aggressive guy but he tries to box too. What we’ll find out, how good can he box against a guy who can fight? I’ve seen him fight Shane Mosley. I’ve seen him fight a couple guys.”

Watching the fight from ringside as opposed to being in Floyd’s corner during the fight…
“Well, when I’m in his corner I pretty tell him what I think he should do as opposed to just watching from ringside, not telling him what to do. But that’s generally what I do. This fight wasn’t like that but the next fight, when he fights Canelo, I will be able to tell him what to do.”

Whether Floyd benefitted from having both his father and Roger in his corner during training camp…
“I’m sure he did, because his father’s been training him since he was a little kid. And I’ve been training him for the last 15, 16 years. So, he had to take something from both of us. But my thing was that he hurt his hand with Guerrero; but I thought, if he pushed, he probably would have had more impact on Guerrero. He hurt his hand, so that’s part of boxing.”

How Floyd will beat Alvarez…
“Floyd do this (pointing to his head). That’s how Floyd wins. Floyd wins because of his ability and he knows what he has to do in that ring. That’s what makes Floyd Mayweather. He knows exactly what he has to do to get that performance and that’s what it was with the other guy. Even though he hurt his hand, he still out-boxed him.”

Why Floyd needed a fight like this…
“You’ve got to understand; you cannot call yourself the best fighter in the sport if you don’t take the risk. That’s what boxing is about. In order to prove to the people that you are the best, then you have to take the risk. That’s what boxing is about. That’s no different than when Muhammad Ali fought George Foreman. George Foreman knocked out everything that was moving. But, Ali said ‘Well, hey, I’m going to fight [him]’ and he turned around and beat him. And that’s how he became so big. That’s part of boxing.”

Whether Golden Boy Promotions is hoping for Alvarez to upset Mayweather…
“Yeah. No questions they are thinking that. They are thinking that because, if he beats Floyd, or if it’s a good fight that means they still got a superstar. You’ve got something to compare with. But, Floyd is going to get ready; he’s going to get prepared to do what he needs to do.”

Over the years, Canelo watched a lot of Mayweather's fights and he noticed a common trend in many of them - Mayweather's opponents begin to get desperate due to frustration.

“The key is to avoid becoming desperate. I've been looking forward for this fight for so long, I’m going to train very hard and become used to his style. Floyd is a very fast boxer, very smart who knows how to counter, but he’s not a fighter who punches a lot. He gets within range to throw one or two punches, steps to the side and moves away. We plan to do a great job in camp, as we've done in all of our fights, and obviously we are going to win," Canelo said.
