As expected veteran MMA middleweight Matt Lindland (21-7 MMA, 0-1 SF) will meet up-and-comer Kevin Casey (3-1 MMA, 1-0 SF) in the main event of next montho39;s Strikeforce Challengers 8 event.
MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com) reported the bout this past week, and Strikeforce executives today made the official announcement.
Also announced for the card is a welterweight bout between undefeated Ohio prospect Roger Bowling (7-0 MMA, 0-0 SF) and veteran Bobby Voelker (21-7 MMA, 1-0 SF).
Strikeforce Challengers 8 takes place May 21 at the Rose Garden in Portland, Ore., and airs on Showtime.
Lindland, a 2000 U.S. Olympic silver medalist in wrestling and former top UFC middleweight, returns to the cage for the first time since a first-round submission loss to Ronaldo Souza at "Strikeforce: Evolution" this past December. With that Strikeforce-debut loss, Lindland has now dropped three of his past four fights, which included a loss to famed heavyweight Fedor Emelianenko in 2007.
His opponent, Casey, is perhaps best known for his affiliation with reality TV personality Spencer Pratt, but the Rickson Gracie jiu-jitsu brown belt does own a 3-1 record in MMA. He made his Strikeforce debut in November and submitted Chad Vance at Strikeforce Challengers 5. He obviously faces his biggest challenge yet in Lindland.
Bowling, a veteran of the Ohio-based MMA Big Show promotion, makes his long-rumored Strikeforce debut with seven stoppage victories in seven pro fights. Six of the wins, including those over notables Seth Baczynski and Shamar Bailey, came in the first round.
Voelker, a Midwesterner whoo39;s kept a busy fight schedule since his 2006 pro debut, looks to build off his recent Strikeforce-debut victory, which came over Erik Apple via TKO at Strikeforce Challengers 5. Heo39;s now won four of his past five fights and seven of his past nine.
